When You're Strange: Mini Review

The other night I watched When You're Strange -- the documentary about The Doors written and directed by Tom DiCillo. DiCillo wrote and directed one of my favorite films: Living in Oblivion, which I highly recommend. I used to be a big fan of The Doors. Still am but just don't listen to them that often. So, I was really looking forward to this documentary. It also got good reviews. But, folks, I was disappointed in this one. If you want a walk down memory lane -- and only that -- you'll be happy. I wanted more. Joan Rivers said in today's Parade magazine: "I hate documentaries that tell you nothing about the person." I go further: "I hate documentaries that tell you nothing new about the person." And that's this movie.

Oh, it's enjoyable. But sometimes a little precious, sometimes choppy -- the transitions aren't smooth.

The best movies I have ever seen

Over at the sisterblog, the definitive list. Feel free to add your own.

Yeah, yeah, I know: Ridley Scott's Alien, Alex Cox' Repo Man, and a couple dozen others belong on that list, and I just fuckin' forgot them. And it's kinda heavy on Kurosawa (he was fucking great! Just fuckin' great!) and Zhang Yi-mou and Satyajit Ray. So sue me.

And, for your edification, the 50 most racist movies that you might not have thought were racist.

Film: Reviews for the week

over at CultureVultures.

Ms. Manitoba totally pwns us in the film department, but in an effort to show we haven't been wasting ALL our time, we've decided to start putting up the occasional film review at our sisterblog.

Other than that, it's read, read, read. I believe we've whittled the humongogigantic reading list down to some 80-plus books for the remainder of the year; we'll be reorganizing it to reflect our book-project priorities in a couple of weeks. So stay tuned, and if you have any book or film recommendations to pass along, feel free. Just do it over there. This is our political and cat stamping-grounds, as it were.
