Health - Watch The Starch Intake

From Auntie Beeb comes this edifying tidbit of health news - a diet high in high-glycemic-index foods, like white bread, white rice, and potatoes, can result in fatty liver disease, which ultimately leads to insulin resistance and a higher risk of liver failure.

The information results from a study carried out at Boston Children's Hospital using diets with identical calorie levels but different ingredients. Processed breakfast cereals, bread, rice, and potatoes all fell in the category of "bad for you." Pasta, nuts, whole grain products, legumes, and fruit, despite having the same calorie content, ranked in the "good for you," or low-glycemic-index, column.

According to the researchers,
Between a quarter and half of all overweight American children are thought to have the condition, he said.

"This is a silent but dangerous epidemic," he said.
