The information results from a study carried out at Boston Children's Hospital using diets with identical calorie levels but different ingredients. Processed breakfast cereals, bread, rice, and potatoes all fell in the category of "bad for you." Pasta, nuts, whole grain products, legumes, and fruit, despite having the same calorie content, ranked in the "good for you," or low-glycemic-index, column.
According to the researchers,
Between a quarter and half of all overweight American children are thought to have the condition, he said.
"This is a silent but dangerous epidemic," he said.
