Environment - Update: Quake in Peru

The Raw Story reports that the quake in Peru has been reassessed at 7.9 on the Richter scale and has killed at least 337 people and injured at least 1,000. Several coastal towns, such as Pisco and Chincha in the south, are in ruins.
Health minister Carlos Vallejos traveled overnight to the hardhit southern coastal region of Ica, some 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Lima, to survey the damage. The government also sent a convoy of trucks to the region carrying medical supplies, doctors and nurses.
Wow. How unlike New Orleans, which is still struggling to rebuild TWO FUCKING YEARS after the quake smashed it, while paying Jeb Bush for pumps that don't work (in a no-bid contract, too!).

Some bloggers have warned of a tsunami. However, the relevant authorities have stated that
The quake struck just offshore at 6:41pm (2341 GMT) on Wednesday and prompted evacuations along the Pacific coast because of fears of a tsunami. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center later lifted its warnings.
