Politics - Vitter In Even Hotter Water

Sometime ago, Lower Manhattanite and several other faithful readers of Steve Gilliard's NewsBlog, formed their own tribute blog to Steve, to carry on his fine tradition of publishing trenchant analysis of military and political strategy while caustically excoriating the deserving.

Their oasis in the desert of political America is known as TheGroupNewsBlog. If you haven't already availed yourself of the pleasures they have to offer, what are you waiting for?

I raise the subject because LowerManhattanite published this searing screed about Rude Ghouliani that had me in a tizzy from all the schadenfreude in my veins. Go read it. It sets an excellent stage for the fall of David Vitter, one of the most repulsive examples of hypocritical Republican godbaggery I've yet read about.

So it turns out a brothel owner from Louisiana is now coming to Senator Vitter's defense. CNN reports:
Jeanette Maier, known as the Canal Street madam of New Orleans. She says she knew Vitter to be one of the "nicest and most honorable men that I ever met."
And of what, precisely, does Mr. Vitter's honorableness consist? Why, he paid her staff $300 an hour for their efforts! Video available at The Raw Story, click "now," above, for the site.

Something tells me this is not helping Senator Vitter much.

In other news, Larry Flynt reveals that Senator Vitter was not so much "doing the right thing" when he admitted to being on the D.C. Madam's list, as trying to pre-empt Flynt's planned outing of his sorry ass. Furthermore, it appears that his business relationship with the D.C. Madam was not a one-time peccadillo, but a lengthy, flourishing, repeat bidness.

In yet other schadenfreude-inducing news, Vitter is married to a former prosecutor, who once famously said of another woman's tolerance of her husband's infidelity:
"I’m a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary," Wendy Vitter told Newhouse News. "If he does something like that, I’m walking away with one thing, and it’s not alimony, trust me."

"I think fear is a very good motivating factor in a marriage," she added. "Don’t put fear down."
I get the feeling Senator Vitter's going to be walking a little funny right soon.

Meanwhile, Vitter's fellow godbags have rounded on him with a vengeance:
In the wake of U.S. Sen. David Vitter’s apology after his phone number turned up in an escort service's call list, a member of the Republican State Central Committee called for him to resign.

Vincent Bruno of Kenner said today that Vitter should resign “for his own good, the good of the party and the good of his family.” If he doesn’t resign, Vitter should “join the Democratic Party where they think that kind of behavior is OK.”
Of course, the brazen hypocrisy of that last sentence is amazing, but hey. We're talking Republicans heah. And furthermore, Bruno adds, wattles trembling with indignation as he speaks, for once, the truth:
“We’re the party of hypocrites,” he said. “Vote for us and we’ll lie to you, we’ll engage prostitutes and we’ll cheat on our wives.”
