Politics - Army Lying About Iraq?
When I was a kid, and my Dad would get mad at us (we were some pretty wild children), he would make extravagant threats that would usually make us all laugh. One of his favorite was, "If you ever do that again, I'll kill you and bring you back to life just so I can kill you again."
Well, it would appear the U.S. Army took a leaf out of Dad's playbook:
The U.S. command in Baghdad this week ballyhooed the killing of a key al Qaeda leader but later admitted that the military had declared him dead a year ago.I'm sure we've all experienced increasing suspicion and cynicism when the Army mouthpieces announce that yet another "important Al-Qaeda leader" has been captured or killed. Shoot, at the rate they've been going, they must've wiped out Al Qaeda's entire leadership four times over. Stumble It!
A military spokesman acknowledged the mistake after it was called to his attention by The Examiner. He said public affairs officers will be more careful in announcing significant kills.
The incident shows the eagerness of the command to show progress in dismantling al Qaeda at a time when Democrats and some Republicans are pressing President Bush to withdraw troops from Iraq. Army Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander, has declared al Qaeda enemy No. 1 in Iraq.
